Lunch at One Punggol Hawker Centre

Singapore - One Punggol Hawker Centre is a convenient place to explore for food, directly linked to Sam Kee LRT Station (PW1) and just a short walk from Punggol MRT Station. With its modern surroundings and variety of stalls, it is an easy destination for a casual lunch.

My first stop was Guo Qin Noodle (#02-25), a family-run business founded in 1995 by Frederick Lee (Li Guo Qin) and still managed by the family, including his daughters. They also operate another outlet at 631 Hougang Avenue 8.

I ordered their pork ribs noodle for $5. The noodles were well cooked with a pleasant texture and tasted delicious.

Three chunky pieces of pork ribs made up the topping, providing a decent portion of meat for the price. Overall, it was a simple, satisfying bowl that made for a good lunch.

Botak Cantonese Porridge (#02-14)  is a family-run business with multiple outlets, and the steady stream of customers was already a good indication of its popularity. This is also made an instant hit by a former President bodyguard now manning this stall.  Lim Hwee Yi protected former President Halimah Yacob, current President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and their spouses.

When I arrived, I placed my order and was given a wireless queue pager. It was a straightforward system, although I had to wait around 10 minutes for my food.

The wait was understandable because the stall was handling quite a number of orders, including takeaway and home-delivery orders. It is always interesting to see how traditional hawker businesses have adapted to the modern food-delivery culture while continuing to serve their regular customers.

For my first taste, I decided to keep things simple and ordered their pork ball porridge.

The porridge was smooth, warm and comforting, with the soft consistency I look for in a good bowl of Cantonese-style porridge. The pork balls provided a little more substance and texture.   It was a decent, well-executed bowl of porridge that delivered exactly what I expected—a comforting, simple and tasty meal.

After trying it for myself, I can understand why Botak Cantonese Porridge has developed such a loyal following.  Sometimes, good hawker food does not need to be complicated. Consistency, comfort and a familiar taste can be enough to keep customers coming back.

A worthwhile food stop in Punggol.
