Day 1 in Prague - Going to Prague

Prague - We took a flight out of Aberdeen bound for Prague.  

The Czech Republic, also known as Czechia, is a landlocked country in Central Europe. Historically known as Bohemia, it is bordered by Austria to the south, Germany to the west, Poland to the northeast, and Slovakia to the southeast.  On 31 December 1992, Czechoslovakia peacefully split into the two sovereign states of the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

It has the most castles in Europe.

There are over 2000 castles and chateaux in the Czech Republic, more than in any other country in Europe. Some of the most famous ones are the Hluboká Castle, Orlík Castle, Lednice Castle and Karlštejn Castle.

Czech Pilsner beer

Czech people are the world’s heaviest consumers of beer. The first pale lager, Pilsner Urquell, was brewed in the Czech city Pilsen in 1842.  International Pale Lagers came out of the rise of Pilsner, which was invented in 1842 in the Czech Republic.  Pilsners, a type of lager named after a Czech City Pilsen, tend to have more hop-forward flavours and they use different yeast. Ultimately, pilsners are just spicier, more hoppy lagers.

It was Otto Wichterle who invented the soft contact lenses in 1959.

The oldest university in Central Europe resides in Prague

Charles University in Prague, founded in 1348, is the oldest university in Central Europe.

National sport is Ice Hockey & Tennis

The men’s national ice hockey team is one the top ranking ice hockey teams in the world.  Their historical success in ice hockey is a source of national pride to Czechs and the sport is perhaps the most popular sport in the country alongside tennis.

Tennis is the other much beloved sport in this country and has a mix of men and women amongst its top ranked players.  Dozens of Czech players have won the Wimbledon.

Our hotel has features that was just facinating:

1.  The lift - you open the lift door, press the floor you want to go to, the cubicle door will closed in the centre and lift will bring you to the floor you want to go.  Once you reach your floor, the cubicle door will open from the centre to the side, then you push the lift door to get out.

2.  The electricity - you need to insert the key, turn on the switch to get the electricity running.  


3.  The Aircon - the first day we tried to switch on the aircon but it will worked so we complain to the reception and we were told that all the windows need to be closed before the aircon will switch on.  So cool.  We closed all the windows, the aircon sounded and it started to blow cold air.

Cheong Guk Jang - fermented bean soup

Seoul - Lunch with Youngjin was at a traditional soup restaurant and it was crowded.   Youngjin asked me many times Cheonggukjang "ok", I said ok not knowing what to expect.  I have tried many weird and smelly good in Seoul, so I was very prepared.   My first time tasting Cheonggukjang and I like it. CheongGukJang 청국장 is fermented soybean soup aka Stinky soup.  Actually, I like fermented food and the smell does not put me off.   I like fermented food because of the many health benefits and also we have them here in Singapore - tempe, belachan, fermented bean curd (which I love with my porridge), chincaluk, etc.. very hot Cheonggukjang  I always buy danjang paste and bring home to make soup.  I understand that they are the same but the difference is Cheonggukjang beans are uncrushed and are fermented for a longer period of time.

Temple Street Night Market

Kowloon - This flea market is full of quirky, Hong Kong souvenirs and t-shirts to take home. The actual market on Temple Street is in the Yau Ma Tei and Jordan sections of Temple Street. The flea market starts in the late afternoon every day and continues throughout the evening. You can find fake’designer' handbags, sunglasses, clothes, and electronic gadgets.  The atmosphere was filled with many tourist of different nationalities.  Along the sides were many seafood restaurants, mostly crowded.    You will also find fortuner teller stalls plying their trade.
