This hidden gem is a picturesque cluster of cottages that offers a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. With its unique layout, historic charm, and vibrant community spirit.
A Village Steeped in History
Footdee's origins date back to the early 19th century when it was designed as a planned fishing village by the renowned architect John Smith. The village was created to provide a safe and comfortable living space for the local fishing community, away from the rough conditions of the North Sea. Today, Footdee retains much of its original character, with its neat rows of single-story cottages and colorful outhouses that have stood the test of time.
One of the most striking features of Footdee is its unusual layout. The village is arranged in a series of squares, each enclosed by the charming cottages. This design not only provides shelter from the harsh coastal winds but also fosters a strong sense of community among the residents. Walking through the narrow lanes and squares of Footdee feels like stepping back in time, with each corner revealing a new snapshot of the village's storied past.
Despite its small size, Footdee is a vibrant and lively place. The residents take great pride in their homes, often decorating them with bright colours, whimsical garden ornaments, and intricate murals. These artistic touches add to the village's unique charm and reflect the creativity and spirit of the Footdee community.
